The Broad, Electronic Media and Allied Workers’ Union (Bemawu) sent a letter of demand to the SABC on 13 October, demanding the appointment of a permanent board, a call for an investigation, the suspension of the SABC’s protest policy and the unilateral restructuring of procedural appointments. Bemawu represents 1 500 SABC employees.

In response to the letter, the SABC said they cannot afford the increase. The broadcaster called for an urgent meeting at 10am on 2 November. Employees gathered together, holding up placards, expressing their frustration over the broadcaster’s refusal to increase their wages.

The protesters disrupted traffic in numbers, in an attempt to raise awareness about their plight, prompting some motorists to hoot in support. A conclusion to the employees’ demands is yet to be concluded.

This is a developing story.
