UJ students excel in research challenge

AUCKLAND PARK – University of Johannesburg students represent the country after their skills are put to the test.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) students came out tops when they were selected to represent the country by the Financial Planning Institute (FPI) of South Africa.

The student teams from the Johannesburg Business School within the Department of Finance and Investments Management represented UJ’s College of Business and Economics in the finals. The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA), Institute Research and the Financial Planning Challenge were hosted by the FPI.

During the competition, students work in teams to research and analyse a publicity traded company, including meeting the companies management in person. The students drafted research reports on their assigned company with a buy, sell or hold recommendation.

The CFA programme is a professional credential which hosts the CFA Institute Research Challenge. It’s also a global competition which provides university students with hands-on mentoring and intensive training in financial analysis.

The four finalist were selected to present and defend their analysis to a panel of industry professionals 17 October at the JSE.

Due to the students innovative business strategies, ideas in addressing business issues and well-executed presentations, led to them winning the South African leg of industry-specific challenges.

They were divided into UJ team one and two, a team from the University of Pretoria and University of Cape Town. UJ team one won the CFA Research Challenge local film and will represent the country at the finals in Ireland next year April.

UJ programme manager and investment management lecturer, Corlise le Roux said both teams which competed in the challenge this year, made the university proud.

“Teams represented UJ at the highest standard and demonstrated the excellence that we expect from students. This is the third time that UJ has won the local CFA Research Challenge in the past five years.

The department is extremely proud of our students who have managed to win two respective competitions in the finance industry within one week,” said Le Roux.
