UPDATE: Uber calls recent attack ‘distressing’

MELVILLE – 'Government and authorities must now step in and take a stronger stand to end this violence,' – Uber.

Uber has responded to the recent Uber/ taxi attack, calling it a ‘distressing situation’.

The attack which took place on 22 October in Melville involved a friend of rapper Jack Parow, Dirk Agenbag, who was allegedly stabbed in the face three times by a taxi driver while he got into an Uber.

The attack is presumed to be one of many attacks in the Uber/ taxi war.

“It is just unthinkable that someone used such violence to limit consumer choice. This is unacceptable,” Uber spokesperson Samantha Allenberg said.

She added that the situation will be thoroughly investigated.

“Our incident response team is reaching out to all parties and will provide whatever support is necessary. We will support the police in their investigation any way that we can.”

Northcliff Melville Times spoke to Brixton police spokesperson, Jeanette Backhoff, who said she saw the post on Facebook, however, no case was reported at their station.

When asked what safety features Uber riders have access to, Allenberg said Uber is doing all it can to assist in preventing incidents and provide assistance to driver-partners and riders.

“[B]ut government and authorities must now step in and take a stronger stand to end this violence.”

Allenberg also assured commuters that Uber is deeply committed to the safety of all who use the Uber app.
