Resident opens her heart to helping the less fortunate

MARTINDALE SOUTH – A resident and the Westdene - Sophiatown Residents Association work together to help members in the community.

Bianca Hattingh takes it upon herself to initiate fundraisers which uplift community members.

Hattingh is a devoted housewife who also divides her time doing work for the community and raising her child.

She said her most recent initiative was a talent show she organised for members in the community last month which raised funds for the Westville Drug And Alcohol Centre.  The Martindale South resident is working on a Christmas tree project for children in her community with the Westdene – Sophiatown Residents Association.

“The idea to start a Christmas tree initiative started when I thought about the people who struggle in the community who could really benefit from this project. I plan to get the community together so we can give to people who won’t get gifts or have any food. I encourage people to please donate stationery, non-perishable foods and toys for the children,” said Hattingh.

She added they would appreciate sponsorship for a Christmas tree and decoration.

The handover will take place at Sophiatown Centre Court and people can contact her or drop off their items at Shoprite from 1 November. The chairperson for the association, Dauw Steyn said the association will also helping Hattingh collect items.

“We feel it’s important to look after our community, especially residents we know who are struggling. Through this project we can help families during the festive season,” said Steyn.

He said the association is also working on starting a vegetable garden at the Westdene Recreation Centre on 28 October. Vegetables will be donated to the Eeufees Old Age Home and a creche at the recreation centre.
