HospiceWits to host annual Tree of Lights event at Johannesburg Zoo

PARKVIEW – The Tree of Life event celebrates those who have lost their lives to a terminal illness.

The annual Tree of Light event hosted by HospiceWits will take place at the Johannesburg Zoo on 26 November.

The event, which is more than 10 years old, aims to celebrate those who have lost their lives to a terminal illness and help raise money for HospiceWits, which cares for those who are still fighting a terminal illness.

HospiceWits provides palliative care to those suffering and aims to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family. Godwill Maseko from HospiceWits said that the event would celebrate those who have lost their lives to a terminal illness.

Maseko said, “People will have the opportunity to enjoy a picnic and celebrate those who were a beacon of hope and strength.”

In order to raise money for HospiceWits to continue providing care, money will be raised through both virtual globes and actual globes.

The virtual globes, which can be purchased on the Tree of Light website, allows people to purchase a virtual light with a message for their loved one which will be displayed on the website. Those who attend the event at the zoo will have the opportunity to purchase a globe which will be displayed on a tree and lit up at sunset.

Maseko added that they hope to continuously grow the event and they hope to raise R500 000 for HospiceWits this year. He added that last year, about

2 000 globes were lit which made for a spectacular sight.

The proceeds raised from the event will go towards covering the costs of HospiceWits which includes home visits for patients and families, inpatient admissions and psychosocial support annually.
