JOBURG – Diwali starts on 19 October and here's what it's all about...
The festival of lights, Deepavali, also known as Diwali, is almost here and some residents will be lighting lamps around their homes.
The five-day festival which starts on 19 October is celebrated around the world, not only by Hindus but also by Sikhs and Jains. The date on which Diwali falls on each year depends on the position of the moon which is why the date changes from year to year.
Diwali spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness and good over evil. The festival is celebrated with lights, lamps and music. Families also share sweets, gifts and food.
During Diwali, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and fertility, is honoured and some followers will say prayers to Lakshmi for a prosperous year ahead. Firework displays are also held to honour the victory and return of Rama to his kingdom. According to lore, Rama was greeted with lights, fireworks and celebrations when he returned from exile after defeating the demon king, Ravana.
The festival is celebrated in autumn in the Northern hemisphere and in spring in the Southern hemisphere which means sunny celebrations for South Africans celebrating the festival.
In Johannesburg, the Weekend Market will have a special free Diwali festival a few days ahead of the actual festival.
