Local businesses collaborate with Linden Residents’ Association to brighten up the area

LINDEN – The Linden Community Association joins forces with local businesses to improve the community.

The Linden Community Association is concerned about addressing residents’ concerns and taking care of the environment.

The beatification portfolio member for the association, Erna Botha said the walkway along 4th Avenue opposite a supermarket is undergoing a much-needed makeover.

The pavement was initially the pride of the community before a gas company’s contractor started installing pipes around the area two years ago. The state of the pavement was left in a poor condition and only recently underwent a much-needed renovation. “We decided to get businesses in the area to contribute a monthly fare of R100 to employ people to landscape the area once a month. So far 20 out of the 25 businesses we had originally targeted and residents have come on board to help make our community beautiful through this project,” said Botha.

Landscapers started removing the litter, rubble and dead plants in the area on 3 October.

She said next week they will install compost and the following week they will install plants to brighten up the area.

“We had discussions with the gas company which led to them instructing their contractor to install the walkway two weeks ago. The contractor also gave us a sizable contribution towards our project. We are very excited to get the project off the ground; it’s already looking better and neat.”

She would like to thank all the businesses and residents for their contribution. Residents also helped pick a flower called Photinia to be planted along the walkway.

The association hopes to make the flower a signature plant which represents the Linden community.

“We are trying to plant fruit trees such as pomegranate and lemon trees around the community. The idea behind this is to celebrate the heritage of Linden and for residents to help themselves to the fruit.”

The association welcomes more donations from community members.
