Biko celebrated 40 years after his death

SOPHIATOWN – Don't miss the 19 Days in September: A chronicle of the death of Steve Biko exhibition at the Trevor Huddleston Centre.

Sophiatown The Mix will host a special exhibition marking the 40th anniversary of the death of Steve Biko at the Sophiatown National Heritage House in the Trevor Huddleston Centre.

The exhibition is compiled by the Donald Woods Foundation and is titled 19 Days in September: A chronicle of the death of Steve Biko. It will be held from 12 September to 1 November and is free.

The exhibition features responses by the then editor of the East London-based Daily Dispatch, Donald Woods. It will exhibit extensive coverage of Biko’s murder by Woods from more than 150 sources including speeches, newspaper reports and other publications.

Included in the sources is Woods’ book Biko which was published in 1978 and later resulted in the award-winning film Cry Freedom.

The director of the film, Lord Richard Attenborough is a former patron of the Huddleston Centre and the soundtrack was composed by then exiled Jonas Gwangwa who won a Grammy Award for his contribution to the film.

A special screening of Cry Freedom will be hosted by the Huddleston Centre board at the end of September. Organisers of the event have urged those who are interested in the screening to vist their website page and Facebook for further details.

Although the viewing times are from 9am to 4pm, Monday through Saturday, interested persons are to consult the Sophiatown The Mix Facebook page under the same name to see whether their viewing times will clash as they will still try and accommodate other events.
