[WATCH] Man arrested after pulling knife on JMPD officer during meter reading

LINDEN – 'The officer took away the knife and took his firearm out because he felt threatened' – JMPD.

A Linden man was arrested on charges of common assault and intimidation after allegedly pulling a knife on a Metro police officer.

“The officer was only doing his job,” said Metropolitan police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar.

The officer was apparently assisting City Power officials with an electricity meter reading.
The incident took place on 17 September on a private Linden property. A video emerged of the incident, apparently filmed by a person known to the resident.

“Once the JMPD officer entered the premises, the resident locked the gate to prevent City Power officials from entering the property,” Minnaar told Northcliff Melville Times.

While it seems the entire incident was not recorded, Minnaar said, “The officer took away the knife and took his firearm out because he felt threatened, to defend himself if need be and stop the threat of getting worse.”

He added that enforcing certain City of Johannesburg bylaws formed part of a Metro police officer’s duties.

When asked why the officer was called to assist City Power officials and whether there had been previous incidents with the resident, Minnaar said he was unsure but suggested it may have something to do with the large dogs on the property.
