Born for the bright lights

The acting bug bit Noni Mkhonto when she was just a child and it propelled her passion for acting to new heights. Since then she has worked herself to the top and has no plans of slowing down.

Mkhonto, who stays in Fairland, said she has performed in various school productions throughout the years, as opposed to participating in other school activities. While her peers favoured sports, she recalls always gravitating towards anything involving the arts.

“I was discovered by an agent in my matric year when I performed as Annie in the musical production. My agent Jenis Williamson was in the audience that day and approached me after the performance to encourage me to join his agency when I’m done with school. My first major production was Alice in Wonderland in 2007, right after my matric year, and in 2015 I performed in the production Sister Act at the People’s Theatre, which I really enjoyed,” said Mkhonto.

The talented actress is also a part of a band called Emil and the Soul Sisters with two other vocalists. The trio has performed around the country and regularly performs on Fridays at a lounge in Montecasino.

Mkhonto is currently performing in a production called Beneath African Skies at the People’s Theatre until 8 October.

“The production is about old African folk tales which you tell around the fire with family and friends that have valuable life lessons at the end of each story. There also a couple of songs which [cast members] sing and dance to which are proudly South African. I mainly play the hare and also the chief’s daughter in separate stories,” said Mkhonto.

She said this production can be enjoyed by the whole family and is an entertaining opportunity for people to watch a cute play with valuable lessons with a great cast.
