UPDATE: Martindale shooting victim a court accused

MARTINDALE – The Sophiatown Police Station silence claims that the victim was a court witness.

More information has emerged following the Martindale shooting incident where a man was shot outside the Newlands Magistrates’ Court.

The victim was shot in the stomach and foot on 24 August outside the court on Main Road, next to the Sophiatown Police Station.

Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, spokesperson for the Sophiatown Police Station, silenced claims that the man was shot before he had to appear in court as a witness.

De Bruyn indicated that he was supposed to appear in court to face charges of pointing a firearm.

When asked if the victim would be rearrested after failing to appear in court, De Bruyn explained that the case would be postponed as the victim is still in hospital.

The spokesperson added that the suspected shooter who was arrested shortly after the shooting will face charges of attempted murder as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm.
