The driver, Kgomotso Tiro, is said to have picked up a cash passenger from a garage on Gordon Road. Once they reached Milner Avenue in East Town near Northcliff, the passenger threw acid into Tiro’s face and made off with his vehicle.
Tiro was taken to Helen Joseph Hospital and has been recovering from the terrible ordeal.
The transport giant has reached out to Tiro’s family and offered them access to free Uber rides as well as trauma counselling referrals.
They have also offered other support to Tiro of which the details are confidential.
“We will continue to liaise with Kgomotso and offer our support,” said Samantha Allenberg, spokesperson for Uber Africa.
“Kgomotso has suffered a terrible ordeal. He has therefore asked to be removed from further media correspondence while he recovers to avoid further stress during his healing process. He asks that the media respect his wishes.”
