MUST READ: Possible witness shot outside court in Martindale

MARTINDALE – A suspected shooter was arrested shortly after the shooting.

Sophiatown Police Station has confirmed that a man was shot outside Newlands Magistrates’ Court next to the police station earlier today.
According to the spokesperson for the station, Warrant Officer TJ de Bruyn, the man was shot in the stomach and foot and was transported to a local hospital.
De Bruyn added that he was stabilised after the shooting.

“One suspect has since been arrested in connection with the shooting. The suspect was found in possession of a firearm stolen in Kimberley,” De Bruyn explained.

The arrest came after the police K-9 Unit tracked the suspect down shortly after the shooting. The suspect dropped the firearm and he was arrested.
In unconfirmed reports, it is alleged that the victim is a witness in a case currently being heard by the court. However, police are unsure whether the man was at the court as a witness or a suspect.

Sophiatown police officers and Suburban Crime Prevention are on the scene of the shooting outside Newlands Magistrates’ Court.

“We aren’t sure whether the shooting took place before or after the man was in court.”

Although the crime scene off Main Road in Newlands was rather small, a large number of bullet casings were found on the scene.
De Bruyn said information around the incident is limited as it is still being investigating by the Sophiatown detectives.
