Substation explosion causes power outage in Linden

An explosion at a substation in Linden caused a power outage in the area on the evening of 23 August.

The explosion caused a massive fire of which residents shared pictures on social media. Linden resident Johnny Kruger stated that the fire began just before 6pm and by 6.30pm the power had gone out. He added that “someone has stolen the unit and cables which caused a short and burst into flames.”

He said that the cause of the fire could be attributed to the theft of equipment in the sub station unit. “This was not an electrical fire, this is not a feeder unit, it’s a standby unit, it’s for backup,” he said. Areas included in the power outage are Linden, Victory Park, Roosevelt Park and parts of Emmarentia.

An update will be made available as soon as possible.
