Westdene residents object to liquor licence application
WESTDENE – 31 residents have submitted objections to a store applying for a liquor licence.
Westdene residents are standing together to deny a potential Thornton Road business a liquor licence.
Thirty-one residents have submitted their objections to the Gauteng Liquor Board and are waiting for a reply regarding the matter.
One of the reasons given for the objection is that there are various liquor outlets all within a 1km radius of the proposed liquor business. This includes a liquor store at the Sophiatown Shopping Centre.
Additionally, within 500m of the planned liquor outlet’s location is a primary school, crèche and four places of worship.
With regard to the primary school and crèche, residents feel underage children will have easy access to liquor, intoxicated patrons might victimise schoolchildren and educators and noise from the premises might disturb children during class.
Objecting residents argue that the outlet will also have some social impact on the area which is already plagued with alcohol, drugs and crime.
Residents had to have their objections in on 4 August. A reply is now awaited from the liquor board.
Usually, those objecting are invited to attend a hearing where the matter is discussed before a decision is made regarding the application.
