UPDATE: Police looking for suspect who threw acid at Uber driver

EAST TOWN – Police are now looking for a male who called for an Uber at 2am on 6 August.

The taxi driver who was hijacked and burned with acid in East Town during the early morning of 6 August is confirmed to be a 51-year-old Uber driver.

Samantha Allenberg, from Uber Africa Communications, said, “What’s been described [on 6 August] is deeply upsetting. We are investigating the incident and have reached out to the partners’ family to check on his well-being and offer our support. We stand ready to help the police with any information needed for their investigation.”

The man had picked up his passenger at around 2am from a garage on Gordon Road. The passenger then allegedly threw acid into the driver’s face when they reached Milner Avenue, and made off with the vehicle.

A local security company, Suburban Community Policing, found the man screaming on the corner of East Street and Milner Avenue.

Clive Maher, from the company, said he was called out at 2.30am to assist the injured driver. “He told us that he had picked the passenger up at the garage on Gordon Road, and had acid thrown in his face a few minutes later,” said Maher.

According to Maher, the vehicle was recovered later the same day, nearby.

ER24 paramedics, who responded to the call soon after said the driver was in a serious condition when paramedics transported him to a nearby hospital.

Provincial South African police spokesperson, Captain Kay Makhubela, confirmed that police are looking for a male who called for an Uber at 2am on 6 August. He said no suspect has been arrested.
