Sanitary towel fundraiser in Auckland Park for Women’s Month

BRIXTON – A group of students work together to collect sanitary towels for Women's Month.

In the spirit of Women’s Month, a student organisation established a sanitary towel drive for high school girls.

The initiative will officially take place from 4 to 31 August at the University of Johannesburg (UJ).

Student organisation chairperson of admin, Thabiso Lema said the project is dedicated to young girls who cannot afford to purchase sanitary towels.

The organisation operates in different campuses around Gauteng and UJ is the largest branch.

“We welcome students, residents, organisations and ward councilllors to donate sanitary towels to our organisation. Our main focus are students although we work on other initiatives focused on uplifting the community.

“On 1 September, we are planning a campaign to find an area to clean up and will work as a team to make it happen with other ward councillors,” said Lema.

The Brixton resident believes the country is an unequal society which brings about various disadvantages for young women. Sanitary towels are part of a women’s life and are needed on a daily basis.

“It’s important for young women to feel motivated to go to school, work and take part in whichever activities they need to attend to. We are trying to donate these towels in order to engage the community to create a nation of givers.”

Students can donate the sanitary towels at the Student Representative Council.

The public can also drop them off on campus or alternatively contact the organisation to have them picked up.
