City’s services up and running

JOBURG – Limited services were due to certain functions within the City's Sap system being closed for the end of the financial year.

The City of Johannesburg said all its customer service centres are back to normal after limiting services due to the end of the City’s financial year.

Kgamanyane Maphologela, group finance spokesperson, said the limited services were due to certain functions within the City’s Sap system – the software that runs all the City’s business processes – being closed for the end of the financial year.

He said it normally happens every year for about a week.

“This is part of the business cycle that occurs annually when the City concludes its financial year and prepares to start a new one,” Maphologela said.

“During his budget speech in May, MMC for Finance, Dr Rabelani Dagada, said the current Sap system will need to be re-implemented. The initial implementation of this platform was poorly managed within the City.”

The system is crucial for the City to be able to manage the current crisis. Dagada believes the amalgamation of 16 municipal councils into the current metropolitan municipality contributed to the crisis. When customer data was being centralised, so that the City had one profile of a customer instead of different profiles across departments and entities, the information was not correlated.
