Come on, it’s almost time to dive in

JOBURG – The City of Johannesburg hopes that more pools will open when the swimming season starts on 1 September.

With only five weeks left before 1 September, the MMC for Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba, is gearing towards opening at least 90 per cent of the City of Johannesburg’s public swimming pools.

On 21 July Sifumba embarked on a site inspection at some of the City’s 58 swimming pool facilities. A total of 51 pools were closed for routine maintenance during the winter season.

Kathy Parker, Region B director of aquatics, discusses the difficulties of pool maintenance with MMC of Community Development, Nonhlanhla Sifumba.

Ward councillors, regional directors and officials from the Department of Community Development all joined Sifumba for site inspections to check if the pools are ready to be used by the public. These inspections will continue until 1 September – ‘D-day’.

“It is important that residents are able to access all of our facilities, including swimming pools,” Sifumba said. Since maintenance is the main reason why some of the City’s pools are closed during the swimming season, better planning is required for pool care across the City, she added.

Residents can also help by adopting public pools. Pool users can, for example, keep the area clean, donate building and maintenance materials, and ensure safe and friendly pool usage.

Residents will be informed beforehand if some pools will not be open to the public. “We need to be honest with residents,” she concluded.
