Open your heart and home to a new pet from Animal Cruelty League in Westdene

WESTDENE – The Animal Anti Cruelty League encourages members of the public to show interest in providing a home for a pet from a shelter.

Recorded footage depicting a Jack Russell being abandoned by its owners at the time spread like wild fire on social media.

The dog was dropped off in front of a resident’s home on Youth day in Westdene and later taken to the Animal Anti Cruelty League (AACL). Thousands of people approached the shelter wanting to adopt the dog.

Public relations officer for the league, Heather Cowie said they did not expect such a massive response from the public and it was a pity that all the other pets available for adoption do not have such a dramatic story behind them.

“The footage has such an impact on people’s sensitivities and emotions locally and as far as Argentina and Chile that we were besieged with inquiries. The fact of the matter is that we have so many beautiful animals who just want a second chance,” said Cowie.

She said that if someone would like to adopt a stray dog, it can only be done after 14 days. “The adopter’s details will be recorded on the shelter’s cards system and they will be contacted once the stray period is up or in the event of the animal being claimed by the owner.

“Once the stray period is over, we would alter the status to available for adoption. Clients are required to complete a property inspection form and if their property is passed; the adoption process can proceed. If they are adopting an adult dog, the dog needs to be booked in to be sterilised and we let the client know when they can come collect the pet. If the animal is a puppy and is too young for sterilisation, once the adoption papers have been completed they are able to take the pet home on the same day.”

She encouraged members of the public to support animal shelters and to give animals another chance in life.
