Woman treated for smoke inhalation after bus catches alight
NEWTOWN – A woman suffered from smoke inhalation after a bus caught on fire on the M1 highway.
A bus caught alight on the M1 highway in Newtown, resulting in a woman suffering from smoke inhalation on the morning of 13 July.
ER24 paramedics arrived on the scene at approximately 6.30am and, upon their arrival, they found a bus parked in the middle lane. At the time, a number of passengers were trying to evacuate the vehicle, while others had managed to climb out.
Paramedics acted quickly to assess the patients and discovered only one passenger had suffered from mild smoke inhalation. The woman was treated for her injuries and thereafter transported to a nearby provincial hospital for further care. There were no other injuries reported.
It is believed the engine compartment of the bus caught alight.
Fortunately, the bus driver and a motorist who was passing by managed to extinguish the fire using an extinguisher.
Police officers were also on the scene for further investigation.
