Mayor Mashaba pays tribute to Ray Phiri

JOBURG – '[Phiri] will indeed be remembered for his deep-rooted passion for music which transcended borders and promoted social cohesion'.

Following the passing of musician Ray Phiri at the age of 70 on 12 July, City of Johannesburg Mayor, Herman Mashaba, extended his condolences.

He wrote:
“I would like to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of legendary South African jazz musician Ray Phiri, who passed away this morning at the age of 70.
Phiri, also affectionately known as Just Now Phiri, was the founding member of the group The Cannibals in the 70s. When The Cannibals disbanded, he found multi-gold and -platinum selling group Stimela.
From the late 70s, he inspired many music fans across South Africa with his socially conscious lyrics and performance – a trait that remained synonymous with his legend until the end. His music gave many South Africans joy and a voice during the dark days of apartheid.
With albums such as Fire, Passion and Ecstacy (1991) and Look, Listen and Decide (1992), he promoted African jazz, fusion and mbaqanga, and is considered to be one of the most talented lead guitarists South Africa has ever produced.
In 2011 he was awarded the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, for his contribution to the South African music industry and the successful use of the arts as an instrument of social transformation.
Phiri famously stated, “I am a student of life and I’ll never stop discovering, creating and exploring. It’s never been my objective to make commercial music but instead, transform South African music into something respectable. In the end, it’s your art that remains when everything else has gone.”
He will indeed be remembered for his deep-rooted passion for music which transcended borders and promoted social cohesion.
May his soul rest in peace.”
