Tribute service for Suna Venter

AUCKLAND PARK – The SABC8 and the SOS Coalition will be hosting a memorial service for Suna Venter

The SABC8 and the SOS Coalition invite the public and media to join them in remembering and celebrating friend and fighter for media freedom, Suna Venter.

The tribute service will take place on 6 July at the M1 Studio at the SABC in Auckland Park at 4pm for 4.30pm.

Venter joined the SABC as part of RSG Nuus en Aktualiteit’s current affairs team eight years ago. She made headlines last year when, alongside seven other colleagues, she fought against editorial interference in the newsrooms. They would later become known as the SABC8 and their influence would change the South African media landscape.

Venter died last week after being diagnosed with a cardiac condition believed to be brought on by trauma and prolonged stress. She was 32 years old at the time of her death.

Over the course of the past year, Venter endured death threats, intimidation and numerous assaults.

Despite this, she refused to give in to the victimisation and continued in her fight for press freedom and editorial independence.

“Suna will be missed,” said an SABC spokesperson.

The remaining SABC8 would like to invite friends, media colleagues and civil society to join them in remembering her tenacity, passion and fighting spirit, and to pay tribute to her ultimate sacrifice in the face of adversity and in the fight for a free and independent public broadcaster.

Let’s honour her legacy. Let’s remember Suna and what she stood for.
