South African Depression and Anxiety Group helps you cope

NORTHCLIFF– Free depression and anxiety support groups will be hosted at the Northcliff Union Church.

The South African Depression and Anxiety Group (Sadag) welcomes residents to be part of a free depression and anxiety support group, which will meet at the Northcliff Union Church.

These meetings will cater for people who suffer from substance abuse or mental illness. The meetings will take place every second week starting on 4 July, at 7pm.

Research shows that support groups help people cope and recover from a variety of challenges. They also help people cope with the diagnosis of mental illness, provide information on the illness and ways to treat and manage it. In addition it helps give patients and loved ones time to adjust.

Sadag operations director Cassey Chambers said the organisation offers over 200 support groups nationwide and each group is different.

“Individuals who have experienced or have been treated for any mental health issues like depression, anxiety, trauma and bipolar are welcome. The group can help people connect to others who have been through similar situations, to share and network,” said Chambers.

Chambers said mental illness can cause isolation and loneliness to those affected. The sense of belonging and social support helps a person through their recovery. There are also support groups for family members and couples too.

“The support groups are run by either members who have experienced mental health issues or by professionals in the community. These groups allow people the opportunity to form connections with other members experiencing similar troubles and an opportunity to learn from one another,” said Chambers.
