Schoolchildren give blood to save lives

VICTORY PARK – Da La Salle Holy Cross College youngsters are enthusiastic about donating blood.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) visited Da La Salle Holy Cross College on 22 June for its annual blood drive donation that takes place every term.

Principle of the college, Atholl Murray said many of the schoolchildren, teachers and management staff donated blood in response to the service’s urgent call two years ago and has been hosting drives ever since.

Blood is especially needed due to the school holidays and a number of people will be travelling.

“The learners are encouraged to give of themselves, their time selflessly and enthusiastically in order to help their community and each other. This is achieved through various outreach and community service projects; to share the responsibility they have to the world. The learners also encourage each other to be the best person they can be and to develop a commitment of service to others,” said Murray.

He added that the schoolchildren are encouraged to strive to ensure that the rights of all are held sacred. The school also challenges other schools in the area to do the same for a good cause.

“We are exceptionally proud of our college community heroes and how they gave so enthusiastically of their time and blood. There is such a huge need for blood, and we encourage other schools and local communities to join us by doing something that will cost you nothing but will save a life.”
