The Sophiatown Neighbourhood Watch is lending a helping hand to a teenager who was robbed of food in Westdene.
According to Neighbourhood Watch, the 15-year-old’s cooler bag containing packets of biltong was stolen in Second Avenue on 27 June.
The thief is said to have been a young man dressed in a black jacket and jeans.
It was later discovered that the boy was trying to generate income from the biltong after his father suddenly passed away in December last year. His household includes his sister and mother, who is currently unemployed and desperately looking for work.
“[We] have her CV available should anyone know of any open positions,” Dauw Steyn, chairperson of Neighbourhood Watch said.
Residents in the area have since jumped at the opportunity to help the teen and his family, and Neighbourhood Watch is now facilitating should residents want to assist to the family.

• Meat
• Clothing.
Donations can either be taken to Milos Hardware in Thornton Road, Westdene or 47 Toby Street, Sophiatown.
The Neighbourhood Watch has asked those who would like to make cash donations, to deposit the money directly into the mother’s account: RA Coetzee, account number 008114218, Standard Bank, savings account, Melville.
“Thank you to everyone willing to assist in this time of need,” Steyn concluded.
