After the City of Johannesburg suspended its ombudsman and its executive director of group corporate and shared services, rumours have been doing the rounds that the group chief financial officer is going to resign.
But confirming his position, Reggie Boqo said he is still the City’s chief financial officer.
City manager, Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni confirmed this on 21 June. He said, however, that the process of recruiting the CFO when Boqo’s contract ends in December is already underway. Boqo can reapply for the position after his current contract ends.
“The process is starting for the GCFO, head of group governance and executive director of environment and infrastructure services, and development planning posts.”
Former finance MMC, Geoffrey Makhubo, said during the budget debate that he admired Boqo, but not the latest budget put forth by the City.
Various positions within the City have seen changes in recent months. After the annual general meeting of the City’s 12 entities, Mayor Herman Mashaba announced that all its boards’ contracts have not been renewed, but that new boards were appointed.
On 19 June, Gumede returned to the office to resume his duties following the Labour Court ruling that found his suspension to be unlawful and invalid.
His return was, however, cut short by the news that the City had filed for leave to appeal the Labour Court ruling. Gumede had to reportedly leave his office just after 11.30am on the day, after receiving news from his attorneys that the City is appealing the judgement.
