67 Blankets keeps the winter chills at bay

NEWLANDS – Community members gathered at the Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie for a blanket handover.

The Suid-Afrikaanse Vrouefederasie (SAVF) was delighted to have 67 Blankets for Mandela Day handover beautiful blankets to their members

The handover took place at the Vrouefederasie’s offices in Newlands on 6 June.

The handover was attended by the organisation’s founder Carolyn Steyn who partnered with the South African Music Rights Organisation (Samro) to make the generous donation possible. She said, “I believe SAVF is doing such great work in the community and to see the smiles on the children’s faces is one of the reasons I do this job.

“The atmosphere here today is great. I love going to handover blankets because I get to see the light in the eyes of the people who receive them. I see a difference being made no matter how small a donation is and how it brings more warmth for people in winter.”

Samro chief financial officer Greg Zoghby said the knitting and crocheting project was initially introduced by his former employee Koula Norman, who had since passed away. She got a team together to form the KnitWits and recruited other people too.

“The KnitWits made over 40 blankets and donated 15 blankets to the families during the handover,” said Zoghby. “On 10 June there will be a family day at the SAVF where the remainder of the blankets will be handed out. We also support Door of Hope which is a home for abandoned babies in the South of Joburg.”

Newlands resident Janine Pieterson was grateful to receive blankets and attended the handover with her daughter Gia. She said it was wonderful to be part of the event and it was also a lovely experience to have met Steyn.

Steyn encouraged the community to participate in the Secret Scarves initiative and donate scarves by 13 July.

The scarves will be placed in trees in different cities for those in need to use.
