They throw kindness around like confetti

WESTDENE — A local NGO helps those so easily forgotten.

The elderly are often forgotten by society but not by three proactive women who take the time to look after those so easily forgotten.

Marisah Watson, Michelle Moodley and Alyson Samson are the women behind the feeding scheme at the Eeufees Oord Old Age Home. While Eeufees residents are either grant or pension recipients, many live below the breadline.

Genina Motsume celebrates her 80th birthday with Kindness Like Confetti during the weekly feeding scheme.

Watson and Moodley have for the past eight years fed residents of the home once a week using their own funds. Not only did the pair buy the groceries, they also cooked a healthy balanced meal for the elderly residents.

Earlier this year the pair received a major boost when Samson joined their team. Samson is the brain behind Kindness Like Confetti, a registered non-governmental organisation, which has its hand in many projects including a sanitary pad initiative.

“When I heard about Marisah and Michelle’s feeding scheme I thought I could help. I have a registered NGO, I could get donations going for them,” Samson said.

While the feeding scheme is fully operational, Watson and Moodley last received a food donation for the home on 26 May and have had to once again dig into their own pockets.

The NGO is pleading with the community to help them grow the feeding scheme. The organisation has, however, made it very clear that they do not accept monetary donations.

The trio said they usually did not ask for donations of meat because one of the cooks and a number of residents are Muslim.
