Cell C’s Take a Girl Child To Work Day campaign empowers schoolchildren

MELVILLE – Hotel Hope Ministries is one of many organisations that took young girls under their wings and taught them about what it takes to run a non–profit organisation.

Thousands of young girls had the opportunity to experience the workplace through Cell C’s Take a Girl Child To Work Day campaign.

Hotel Hope Ministries is one of many organisations that opened their hearts on 25 May to give young women firsthand experience in various careers.

Aurora Girls High School children spent the day at the non-profit organisation for abandoned and orphaned children in Melville. Each schoolchild was assigned a mentor who included them in their daily activities.

Hotel Hope Ministries’ social worker Ruth Nkosi said she taught a youngster how to deal with children’s cases including how to deal with parents and the process of adoption.

“I wanted her to learn what being a social worker entails. Some people believe it is only about comforting people whereas we go beyond that and deal with different cases,” said Nkosi.

Nwabisa Khumalo from Aurora Girls High School said that working with a social worker was a great, learning experience.

“I learnt about the circumstances in which children are taken away from their parents, the process it takes to get their children back and the process of adoption. I feel inspired to teach my family and friends about the adoption process so they can learn something new too,” said Khumalo.

The children’s home has a number of fundraising initiatives such as Hope Charity Shop, which is also situated in Melville.

Mavis Sibanda from the school was assigned to work at the charity shop and described it as an amazing experience.

“It is a great opportunity to see people come to the store and actually buy beautiful items that will help children at the orphanage. After this experience, I would like to offer my time to helping out at the charity and I reckon other people should do it too, more often,” said Sibanda.

Aurora Girls High School children are awarded certificates for their participation in Cell C’s Take a Girl Child To Work Day campaign.
