A century full of memories
Auckland Park resident, Edith Grant celebrates 100 years of life.
Some might say what keeps life interesting is all of its uncertainties. Though a few aspects of life are inevitable, most are never promised to us.
Edith Grant, a resident at the German Old Age Home in Auckland Park has lived through two world wars, the moon landing, the first cellphone ever made and has witnessed many world firsts, to finally reach the formidable age of 100 on 15 May.
Administrator for the home, Michaela Thomas explained that Edith was as good as she could be, adding she had changed in the last seven years she had been at the home.
“Turning 100 years old is quite a big deal; she is usually happy and talkative. Edith is a much-loved member of the home who is cherished by all who meet her. She should just carry on being the person she is as she is loved by the staff and those who know her.”
On the day of her birthday, she was surrounded by fellow residents and staff at the home as they sang happy birthday to her and celebrated her long life in song. Edith has three children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren who have been lucky enough to have her share in their special occasions and triumphs.
One of Edith’s children, Allan, said his mother’s lived a happy life. “It’s great to see her reach this milestone; we love her very much – she is the greatest!”
The family had all gathered on Mother’s Day (14 May) to celebrate Edith’s life with all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren around her as they shared laughs and memories with her.
