More drunk drivers on Joburg roads this Easter

JOBURG – Along with the national increase, Metro police arrested more drunk drivers this Easter.

With an overall national death toll increase over the Easter weekend from 187 last year to 235 this year, the City of Johannesburg’s Metro police have seen a 2.2 per cent increase in arrests.

According to MMC for Public Safety, Michael Sun, despite additional shifts, increased visibility and more roadblocks, Sun said, Metro police officers arrested 815 drunk drivers over the Easter weekend, almost triple the average weekly number of drunk driving arrests.

According to the City, about 99 motorists were arrested for speeding, with the worst offender, who was caught travelling at 222km/h.

“The Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) responded to a total of 22 calls over the long weekend, two of which related to major accidents in which several people lost their lives.

“On Saturday, there was a fatal accident on the N12 that claimed the lives of three people. In the other accident, which claimed four lives, beer bottles were found in the vehicle,” he said.
