Wits University comes out tops

JOHANNESBURG – Wits University is ranked from more than 23 500 universities around the world.

Wits University has been recognised by the Centre of World University Rankings (CWUR) after CWUR published its inaugural subject rankings.

Wits deputy vice chancellor for research, Professor Zeblon Vilakazi said the university was pleased with how they did in the rankings.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 ranked Wits University 18th in the world in development studies and 22nd in mineral and mining engineering.

Wits ranked in the following subjects:

  • Sociology (top 250)
  • Business and management Studies (top 300)
  • Chemical engineering (top 300)
  • Psychology (top 300)
  • Economics and econometrics (top 400)
  • Mathematics (top 400)
  • Chemistry (top 450).

“Over the past few years, we have significantly increased our research output and have had an increase in the number of highly rated scientists. Leading local and international scholars have joined Wits and we now host the largest number of DST-NRF Centres of Excellence in the country. This is part of Wits’ commitment to being a nationally responsive and globally competitive institution,” said Vilakazi.

The ranking is based on the number of research articles in international top tier journals.

There are more than 23 500 universities in the world and the CWUR rankings ranked the world’s leading universities in 227 subjects.
