Councillor’s Corner: Gutters not maintained

JOBURG – Read this weeks' question in Councillor's Corner.

This week, Annette Samson from Fairland asked:

Please tell me why the gutters in our suburbs and city are never cleaned?

I have had an ongoing correspondence with [City Parks] about this, to no avail. Everywhere I drive I see gutters either filled with sand, refuse and grass and in some cases small shrubs grow in them. Many pavements need to be cleaned as well.

Ward 69 councillor Genevieve Sherman answered:

Residents must please report storm water drains that need to be cleared via email to hotline@jra.org.za, or the Johannesburg Roads Agency’s Find and Fix mobile application, or by calling the City’s call centre.

We acknowledge that the previous administration failed to maintain the storm water drains, and many drains need urgent attention. We ask the residents of the City to assist us by reporting these.

Please report illegal hoarding of building materials, and building rubble on pavements as well. A lot of these materials end up in the storm water system after heavy rains and cause untold damage. Residents’ failure to obtain a hoarding permit and to contain their building materials properly is a fineable offence.

As the new administration of the City, we will be re-introducing proper maintenance schedules for the storm water system.
