Some interesting ladies celebrate 50 years

ROOSEVELT – Ladies Interest League celebrates its golden anniversary at Roosevelt Park Bowling Club.

It was an auspicious occasion for the Ladies Interest League as they celebrated the league’s 50th anniversary.

To commemorate their golden anniversary the ladies held a special event at Roosevelt Park Bowling Club on 5 April.

Guests that attended the event were long-time members and former chairwomen of the league.

Current chairperson, Elizabeth Sole explained that the league was founded in 1967 by Jean Tonkin who invited 10 friends, who were all young mothers, to her home in Blairgowrie.

“The idea was to have a talk on various subjects each month which would be of interest to the group, avoiding any topic dealing with children or pets,” she said.

The league meets every first Wednesday of the month at the bowling club and it consists of about 80 women.

They invite guest speakers who are experts in various fields to give a presentation, from diplomats to historians and the members leave a session informed and stimulated.

In addition to this, members sell homemade handcrafts or baking products and the money raised from these items is donated to a charity at year’s end.

On the day of the anniversary, Sole jokingly highlighted that the league could boast that they were older than Pick n Pay, adding that the league had lasted this long even without a lot of financial backing.

Former chairwoman, Cathy Wickham said she was honoured to have been part of the league and said how funny it was that when it started, all the women were young mothers and now they have grown older together.

The women now look forward to a great year filled with more insightful information for them to use.
