MUST READ: Metro shut down Beyers Naude for protest action

JOBURG – Beyers Naude Drive is closed off due to protest action.

Beyers Naude Drive was closed off to all traffic between the on and off ramps of the N1 North and South.

Metro Police had cordoned off the area with tape and vehicles as protesters continued on the Beyers Naude off ramp onto the N1 South, flanking the road shouting Zuma must fall and asking cars to hoot.

Some members of the group formed a barricade and closed off the off ramp to cars who did not hoot.

Vehicles on Beyers Naude were being forced to take off ramps onto the highway to avoid this section of the road.

Protesters who were still at the intersection late afternoon commented on the protest action which was still continuing on the road.

Joyce dos Santos said, “I think we have all had enough of the nonsense in South Africa and now it is time for us all to stand together which everybody has been doing as you can see it is absolutely amazing, Save SA, here we go!

“Let’s all unite and stay together, it is not about racism, we love everybody we just got to save our country,” added Nadine Davidson.

Shelley Seane said, “I’m actually glad that people in our area came out because this is not a race thing, this is about Zuma and nobody is happy about Zuma no matter if you are black, Indian, or coloured and this has been going on for a long time so I am glad to see that people are coming together.”

About her sign ‘Hoot if you want Zuma out’, Seane said, “Not everyone is going to be out and saying something, everybody is going to work, people are driving around, so this sign means is you don’t want Zuma, hoot!”

“I think this is going to unite us more than anything first of all. Corruption must fall. Corruption is going to fall. We are doing this for our kids at the end of the day. This is our Sharpville,” she added.

Her friend, Thato Forane said, “I’m doing this for my kids, so they one day look back and know their mom did something for them and for the country, because this is for all of us, if we are not doing anything about it then no one is going to do anything about it.”

Alex Niderheitmann and Dylan Peterson hold up their sign for Beyers Naude Drive motorists.

Metro Police Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said that the department had not received any complaints from motorists with regards to the protests.

He encouraged all community members to abide by the rules of the road at all times and that the Metro Police would not allow the safety and property of the community to be compromised in any way.

Minnaar has confirmed that the road is now opened to users.
