Bowls hot off the press

MONTGOMERY PARK – Members from the printing industry played a fun game of bowls in order to raise funds for charity.

The printing, packaging and signage industries came together for their first Gapp Bowls Day at the Auckland Park Bowling Club. The event, organised by The Gapp Magazine under the auspices of its corporate social investment programme The Gapp Village, was aimed at raising funds for Barnswallows Baby Shelter that takes care of children who have been abandoned.

Sentient Publishing editor Mark Norris said that 12 companies participated, each with their own team of four players. At the end of the event on 24 March, R4 500 was raised for the shelter.

Maria Silveiro, Tumi Mashao, Renier Smit and Nhlanhla Buthelezi work as a team.

“The award ceremony took place at the end of the bowling event. First place went to Ince, Finishing Spot came second and Thunderbolt Solutions came third.
As their reward, the Ince team received a trophy and each member received a bottle of whiskey.

The bowlers worked hard in their teams and assisted each other with mastering bowling techniques. Jo-Ann Lithgow from Papercor Holdings said that she would like to see more events like this and believes more needs to done for charity in order to give back. She added that she has never played before although she’s learning as she goes along and bowls is more fun that it looks.

Sentinent Publishing director Vikesh Roopchand said the idea of the event was to bring people together through bowling and raise funds for charity.

“When this event came up, a member of the Auckland Park Bowling Club suggested that it be hosted at the club and because bowling is a [sport] that needs a bit of a boost. We thought let us do something really different since we have an industry of people who have probably never played the sport before who want to donate to charity and don’t know how,” explained Roopchand.

Barnswallows Baby Shelter director and founder Rene Testa said that the funds will be used to purchase a printer and an anti-bacterial steamer.

“We would like to thank everyone for what they did and we are grateful. It’s a little that makes a difference,” concluded Testa.
