King David Pre-Primary School raised R3 700 in support of a worthy cause by selling cupcakes.
The school, which is situated in Victory Park believes that children need to be taught about being charitable and helping those less fortunate from a young age.
Nirvana Rogers, marketing manager for the school, explained that in the midst of celebrating Purim, a Jewish holiday that commemorates the saving of the Jewish people from Haman, the senior group was introduced to Uvemvane, a nonprofit organisation which provides psychotherapy to those who have limited access to mental health care services.
“Uvemvane works with children and families who have experienced trauma or adverse life experiences. During the week of Purim celebrations, the children made butterfly wings, learnt about the life cycle of the butterfly and also enjoyed a drama session on butterflies as the Zulu word uvemvane means butterfly,” said Rogers.
On a separate occasion, the school also enjoyed a fun-filled pyjama evening. Rogers said, “Parents, children and staff came to school in their pyjamas to spend an evening bonding, socialising and deepening the connection between the school community.”
Along with all the fun, Rogers added that the children also enjoyed making lanterns with their parents and played games under the beautiful night sky.
“The school was happy to provide families with the opportunity for children to play outdoors safely and freely yet simultaneously teach children to assess risk and develop the skills to manage new situations,” she concluded.
