Doing it for themselves

EMMARENTIA – At a cost to the business of R1 500 a day, the entire border of the golf course is to be cleaned up.

Doing it yourself has never rung truer than a local landscaping company’s community initiative bordering Franklin Roosevelt Park and Emmarentia.

About a month ago, Charl de Jong, co-owner with Tristan Price of TLC Landscaping and Design, volunteered to help out the community by cleaning up around the Randpark Creek 9 golf course.

De Jong, from Fontainebleau, said they wanted to help the community.

“If you do things for the community, it comes back to you,” he said.

Felicity Lawlor who contacted the landscaping business after they posted their offer on a Facebook group, said the bushes were growing over the golf course’s fence, pushing it down.

She said they found holes cut through the fence, a possible escape route for criminals.

Lawlor, according to the golf course’s manager Norman Hodge, had played a critical role in the organisation of maintenance around the course.

“It was about time it was done and without Felicity’s drive we would not have come this far,” he said.

Lawlor said that when she contacted City Parks they informed her that the cutting of grass on pavements was not their responsibility.

She added, however, that City Parks was helping to remove the cuttings. The utility is appealing to communities to maintain sidewalks adjacent to their homes, a policy already in place that makes residents responsible for this task.

“This will go a long way towards alleviating some of the pressures of timeous delivery, and will allow the greening entity to focus on parks, cemeteries and street trees that require more specialised maintenance services,” City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said.
