Mancosa renames its auditorium in honour of Kathrada

AUCKLAND PARK – Mancosa renamed its main auditorium to pay tribute to struggle veteran, Ahmed Kathrada.

The Johannesburg campus of the educational institution, Mancosa, publicly announced the renaming of its main auditorium in honour of struggle veteran, Ahmed Kathrada, at a renaming ceremony on 16 March in Auckland Park.

The ceremony was attended by struggle veterans, board members of the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation, Mancosa staff and members of the media.

During his address, the director of the foundation, Neeshan Balton said, “This also comes after Kathrada Foundation in conjunction with the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ) and the Canadian High Commission, hosted a #RaceReporting conference in 2016 for media representatives and journalists.”

A toolkit was also launched during the renaming ceremony by the IAJ.

Ahmed Kathrada Foundation board member Achille Mbembe, during his address, spoke of Kathrada’s lifelong commitment to non-racialism and his defiant yet peaceful character.

The newly-named auditorium is filled with photographs depicting the struggle veteran’s life.

In the evening, a night vigil with prayers was hosted by young people, asking for the quick recovery of the beloved Kathrada who underwent an operation recently.

The gathering took place outside Kathrada’s residence in Killarney and was attended by members of the community, former general of Cosatu Zwelinzima Vavi, former Miss Earth Catherine Constantinides, struggle veterans, scholars, and friends and family members.
