Project Ngonyama helps the community of Windsor by building relationships with the children of the area.
Ngonyama is the Zulu word for lion. As in big lion.
The name is suitable for the big task they take on. The project reaches out to Windsor children, aged between four and 12.
On a monthly basis (normally every second Saturday) the group, with their volunteers, take their bible-based urban outreach programme, including a light lunch, lots of sweets, games, song and dance to the streets of the community and more recently to the Windsor East Recreational Centre.
The project was started by local resident, Gavin Hayes, along with his wife Esther in August 2016.
It is based on a similar approach that started in Brazil and then moved to New York. The Hayes couple believes in building relationships with the children and by being actively involved in their lives.
Each child who participates in the project has their details recorded.
“This offers us doorways into the lives of families within the community as well as an opportunity to provide positive role models across social borders in order to increase the social resource repertoire of the children,” added Gavin.
It is a great sight to see the young minds of Windsor playing and learning in a safe environment.
The project relies solely on private funding for the various activities and meals served. On average about 100 to 300 children show up happy, excited and ready to have a fun-filled Saturday afternoon.
