Roosevelt High School hosted a unique soapbox cart derby to raise funds for the school.
Marcus Diez, a teacher at the school who is also in charge of fundraising, said the soapbox derby was a chance for the schoolchildren to ride in a soapbox cart for the first time and have a blast with friends riding it around the school field.
On the day, schoolchildren came in their civvies ready to possibly win one of the various prizes up for grabs.
Prizes were handed out for the class which did the most laps, the best-dressed class and the class which contributed the most money to the day.
Through the fundraising event, the school managed to raise an incredible R157 000.
“The money will go towards upgrading the senior bathrooms,” said Diez.
The school will also host various fundraisers throughout the school terms each aimed at developing the school.
“Our next fundraiser will go towards building a new lunch area where learners can enjoy their lunch and also do their schoolwork,” added Diez.
He said the day was a major success because nowadays schoolchildren tended to be a bit lazy to do stuff. “But if you saw them today, they were active and had loads of fun.”
One of the highlights, Diez said, was the foam pit. He added that though at first, the children seemed reluctant to try it out, they just needed that one person to jump in and from then on everyone joined in on the fun.
The next fundraiser hosted by the school will be the much-anticipated fun run.
