Community cleans up at Emmarentia Dam

EMMARENTIA – Community members do their bit to keep their neighbourhood clean.

EMMARENTIA – Residents rolled up their sleeves to clean their neighbourhood.

After sights of their community being riddled with illegal dumping, Kingsley Brown and some dedicated residents took it upon themselves to make their neighbourhood a better place.

The much-needed clean-up took place along the spruit on Louw Geldenhuys Drive.

Brown described how the need for the clean-up arose from the fact that illegal dumping was becoming a major issue, with people using the facilities at Emmarentia Dam quite often.

He added that it had also become an eyesore as the environment is naturally beautiful and it was being spoiled by irresponsible and illegal dumpers.

In support of the great initiative, several members of the community were eager to rid the land of the rubbish.

They were aided by  Dumpit Waste Removal, which supplied two trucks and an excavator. Ward 88 councillor Nick Lorimer assisted with all arrangements.

Brown explained the initial idea was to clean up the area and seal it off to stop illegal dumping.

“Now it has transpired that a group of community members is keen to assist in making this a monthly event to address issues surrounding Emmarentia Dam.”

He expressed that although the response was great via social media, she felt that more people could have become more involved, as the work done was to the benefit of the entire community.

The presence of those there on the day was much appreciated, even though they were lacking in numbers.

On the day, the crew managed to remove three truckloads of about 10 cubic metres each amounting to about 30 cubic metres.

They also had 35 refuse bags full of general trash that was in the spruit and along the cycle path.

Brown thanked Dumpit Waste Removal for their assistance as she felt that without their help, it would have taken a few weeks with manual labour and bakkies.
