CHRISTINA DAVIDS: It is possible that Pravin Gordhan has made his last budget speech. There are so many things happening behind our backs. Our government is looking out for its own interests.
JOBURG – Brian Molefe has become South Africa’s latest Member of Parliament. Controversy surrounded him after being implicated in the State of Capture report, leading to his resignation as Eskom CEO.
There are rumours that he is tipped for the the next finance minister position.
The Northcliff Melville Times asked Wits and Joburg University students what their take on the matter was. Here’s what they had to say …
BENJAMIN RALEFETA: Zuma is removing all obstacles. He put Molefe in Parliament and will eventually make him finance minister. In the next three years Zuma will be milking the country.
SHANE BRENNAN: He was implicated in the State of Capture report. This obviously isn’t right. Corruption is involved here, and soon Zuma will fire Gordhan, who is doing a good job, and make Molefe the new minister of finance.
RONALDO ENGELBRECHT: How can you appoint someone like Molefe to Parliament? South Africa does not appoint the right people for the right jobs. Whoever is in charge of appointments is not qualified to do so.
THABO MOTAUNG: He was made an MP as a reward for his corruption at Eskom. Gordhan will be fired soon and Molefe will be our next finance minister. His appointment to Parliament also involved lies and corruption.
LERATO SITHOLE: These corrupt people will work together and appoint people into positions so that they can continue with their corruption.
ZIGGY VENTER: It would be nice if implicated people are appointed to Parliament. There has been clear resistance to Gordhan and this shows that a cabinet reshuffle is coming.
JORDAN GREEN: Molefe isn’t a bad guy. He is very intelligent and did well at Eskom. Everything he did and will do will be done properly. He won’t use any illegal and corrupt means to move forward.
BOITUMELO SWANEPOEL: The government will appoint whoever they want, whenever they want to, regardless of the scandals that surround a person. Regardless of whether you are in breach of the Constitution or corrupt, you are guaranteed a position in government.
