Owner of Steve's Spar, Steve Savvides and 99-year-old Hannah Müller enjoy a warm embrace.
BLACKHEATH – Hannah Müller was treated to a morning of cake and tea with her family and friends at Steve’s Spar as she celebrated her 99th birthday.
On the day, Müller’s infectious smile warmed the hearts of not only those who know her but also the shoppers and staff who saw her elation.
Her birthday was actually on 19 February and she spent that day in a more intimate setting.
The cake which was given to Hannah Müller by Steve’s Spar for her and her friends and family to enjoy.
Owner of the Spar, Steve Savvides said that this was not the first birthday he hosted for Müller, stating that the store had also celebrated her 98th birthday.
This year, the store also baked her a very special cake she shared with those who love her.
Hannah Müller is surrounded by friends and family.
“For the past 30 years, we have been giving pensioners a six per cent discount on items they bought every Tuesday,” said Savvides.
He added that giving back to the community which has supported the store for so many years was all too easy for him.
“You have to give back to the community. A lot of these people have supported the store from the beginning.”
Hannah Müller cuts her 99th birthday cake which was given to her by Steve’s Spar.
Müller, who has four children – 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren – said there was no secret remedy to her long life apart from the fact that God intended it to be so. She recalled a sentiment she once heard from a beauty queen who said, one should always search for the positives in others because that brings out the best in you.

She lives with her daughter, Sarah Slabbert in Northcliff, who said her mother’s strong faith has always been an inspiration to her. “I will miss those moments when she would pray.”
Müller hoped that one day she would leave behind the legacy that you constantly need to do your best and let God take care of the rest.
