AUCKLAND PARK – The Maria van Riebeeck Club celebrated its 77th birthday at the Johannesburg Country Club on 21 February.
The organisation is actively involved in charity work and sponsoring various initiatives.
The club’s vice chairperson, Jeanne Louw said during her speech that the organisation has been a very successful club for the past 77 years and dedicated a tribute to Maria van Riebeeck.
“I am proud of the organisation and grateful for the work we have been able to do for charities. I value giving back to the 12 schools we raise funds for through the Help the Child Fund, by providing the schools with school uniforms for the learners,” said Louw.
The members were entertained by Dewald von Soms, who serenaded attendees and spoke words of encouragement. Guest speaker, Emsie Schoeman praised the club for the good work it has done throughout the years.
The club’s advisory committee member, Anneliese Pletlenbacher said that every month, members receive a piggy bank to fill up with funds.
These funds go towards the Help the Child Fund and the Study Fund, which allocates funding to selected schoolchildren.
“Every month we hand out the funds we’ve collected to the schools for disadvantaged children around Johannesburg. When we meet we hold a raffle and a member will win a different prize. Today, the winner will walk away with a cake,” concluded Pletlenbacher.
