High-speed fibre installation has begun in Greymont

GREYMONT — High-speed fibre is being installed in Greymont and surrounding areas.

GREYMONT — With sidewalks and driveways already dug up, residents are holding their breath as high-speed fibre infrastructure is being laid in Greymont and surrounding areas.
Construction started on 6 February, Vumatel infrastructure is paving the way for other service providers to supply Internet and other services through the network. Residents received a notice from the company, apologising for inconveniences caused by sidewalks and driveways being dug up.

“We have received way leave approval from the Johannesburg Roads Agency to trench in the sidewalk,” the notice read.”Part of [the] construction will involve a detailed planning process of each block, followed by trenching in the sidewalks and crossing of each driveway.”

The trenching phase will be complete after the sidewalks are dug up and protective outer layers or ducts for fibre optic lines are laid.

Vumatel’s presence in Northcliff and surrounding areas have, however, not always been a welcome one. Residents have complained about building rubble piling up and not being removed during construction.
Vumatel spokesperson, Kirsten Eddey expressed that although unique challenges have been faced in the Northcliff area, the company is determined to improve the area rather than ruin it.
The company does, however, clarify that it will reinstate all affected areas to their original or better condition before construction started. It said that before and after photos will also be taken.
The work in Greymont, the company said, could take around six to eight weeks to complete. Each neighbourhood has a designated team that keep in contact with residents, but if you have concerns you can email greymont@vumatel.co.za or visit www.vumatel.co.za.
Each project also has a resident liaison, who in this case is Tauhriq Williams who can be contacted at 071 485 8017.
