UJ choir joins The Kings Singers on stage

AUCKLAND PARK – The University of Johannesburg joins Grammy Award-winning artists The Kings Singers on the stage.

AUCKLAND PARK – The University of Johannesburg’s choir kicked off the year on a high note with an exciting collaboration with Grammy award-winning artists The Kings Singers, on their South African tour, at the Linder Auditorium on 12 February.

Choirmaster Renette Bouwer, who has been a choirmaster for the past 18 years, said when the opportunity arose to share the stage with acclaimed artists it was an obvious choice.
The North-West university took the initiative to bring The Kings Singers to the country and approached her to find out if the choir would be interested in doing a workshop with them when they were in the country. The workshop took place at the University of Johannesburg’s Arts Centre on 11 February.

“During the workshop, the choir worked on a lot of movement within phrases and stunned the choir by allowing them to sing with them, but without a conductor. Everything was based on breathing and feeling together. The workshop was attended by members of the choir, The Kings Singers and delegates from the North West University. Music conductor Sidumo Nyamezele also taught the choir and The Kings Singers a version of Shosholoza,” said Bouwer.

She described the actual performance at the Linder Auditorium as a knockout. The choir loved it and the audience could not believe it. At the end of The Kings Singers’ performance, the choir sang and performed a song from The Kings Singers’ repertoire called This Marriage by Eric Whiteacre.”They are simply the best. I have been a fan of this group since a very young age and even still have a few records of theirs from those times.”
