JOBURG – Visit a Moov centre and get learning, City of Johannesburg encourages.

JOBURG — Ever heard of Moov?

Massive Open Online Varsity (Moov), is the City of Johannesburg’s multimillion-rand initiative that seeks to break down barriers to youth empowerment and employment opportunities.

The online platform gives people access to free, high-quality open-source educational material through courses, which are available through institutions such as Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Adelaide, Microsoft Academy, Wix Web and more.

Moov already opened various centres across the city and registered thousands of students in public libraries. Each centre, according to bridge.org.za – an educational non-profit organisation – accommodates 50 students at a time and is staffed by facilitators who are themselves graduates of Moov.

Massive Open Online Varsity (Moov), offers various courses at public centres across Johannesburg.

According to Moov’s website, there are no entrance requirements and no fixed times.

“If you can put in the effort we can take you to the highest levels of learning,” reads the website. “We have decided to initially start with support for computer fields and business related subjects, but you are more than welcome to study science or engineering, in a great environment.”

Moov, bridge.org.za said, is open to all. It does, however, have a system of phases that act as a filter.

“All students begin with Phase 1, which is centred on basic web design and focused on exposing students to the digital world and building their confidence and Phase 2 gives students a basis for employability,” said the organisation. “Students who progress to Phase 3 choose from the many courses offered by the best universities in the world. Assessment forms an integral component of the online courses and certificates are issued by the accrediting institutions.”

Significant numbers of Moov graduates have found employment, or set up their own web design businesses, bridge.org.za added.
