A tribute to Joost

VICTORY PARK – De La Salle Holy Cross College gather on the school field in remembrance of Joost van der Westhuizen.

VICTORY PARK – Schoolchildren and teachers of De La Salle Holy Cross College High School recently paid tribute to a rugby legend.

After the school heard of the death of Joost van der Westhuizen, children and teachers decided to show just how much the acclaimed rugby player meant to them.

On 7 February, the college lowered the national and school flags to half mast for the day in remembrance of the former Springbok scrum-half.

The youngsters gathered on the school field holding a South African flag, as well as the school badge and stood in a J9 formation.

Headmaster of the school, Atholl Murray, said Van der Westhuizen was an inspiration.

“The J9 logo is a symbol of willingness to strive forward and never give in, no matter how far or how high life’s challenges are, to fight to the end and to show true courage and valour,” he explained.”Joost was a world-class athlete as well as an inspiration to many. He took his fatal illness and turned it around into a positive by creating a platform to raise awareness and support, both locally and internationally, for motor neurone disease.”

Murray added that the rugby hero had inspired many South Africans, and the college community extends their heartfelt condolences to his family.
